Coombe Wood operates a colour scheme to grade members according to their ability at doubles tennis. Colours are allocated by the head coach in conjunction with the membership secretary. A player's colour can change over time as they improve (or deteriorate).
| White | Beginner wishing to improve through non-peak time practice and coaching (not yet able to participate in social tennis) |
| Red | Improving player or a player who prefers a gentle game |
| Yellow | Average club player, may play for lower level club team |
| Blue | Better than average club player, typically plays for low or middle club team |
| Orange | Good club standard, typically plays for middle level club team |
| Green | High level player, plays for top level club team |
The colour scheme helps the club offer a balanced tennis programme to members of all standards. It is used in the following situations:
Coaching
To help members identify the group coaching sessions that best matches their ability.
Tournaments
To enable social tournaments to be organised for players of similar ability. For example we may run an American Tournament only for red and yellow level players.
Social tennis
To assist members to organise themselves into “balanced fours”. An example of a balanced four would be two pairs each consisting of an orange and a yellow player.
Team practice
To assist with organisation of team practice sessions.
